...so we're going to shoot together!
Awesome. We’re so glad that you have chosen our team to make all of your wildest headshot dreams come true. In order for us to help you make that dream a reality, we have put together the information below to clarify any questions you may have regarding how to prepare, what to expect at the shoot, and our process during post-production.
Our goal during your session is to generate a large variety of shots that you can use to submit and audition for any opportunities you want to pursue. That being said, here are some tips on how to get the most bang for your buck.
If you didn’t already answer this in the questionnaire, we like to start sessions by asking the question, “Over the course of the next three years, what are the main types of characters that you see yourself playing and/or want to play?” In response, you can use examples of archetypes, characters from plays, TV shows, movies, actors or actresses you love, etc. to help us create distinct “looks,” which is a fancy way of saying “outfit + backdrop + hair/makeup.” That way, your shots will reflect the full range of characters for which you will be auditioning. It may be helpful to start thinking about this question before your shoot, that way we can chat more specifically in person!
Some other tips and tricks to be camera-ready include:
Get extra rest the night before your shoot (this one can be the hardest, we know).
If you don’t have a skincare routine, consider using moisturizer, lip balm, etc. in the days leading up to your shoot to ensure your skin is well-hydrated.
DRINK WATER! Hydration is key.
Poll some friends on what colors and cuts of tops look best on you, or check out our website for examples of shirts that read well on camera.
If you want to bring a playlist to use during the shoot, we have speakers! Otherwise, we can stream whatever music your heart desires to get you in the spirit.
We shoot out of our home studio at 765 Amsterdam Avenue Apt. 1J on the Upper West Side in Manhattan. Just ring the buzzer and we will let you in! Nearest subway stops are the 1/2/3 at 96th Street or the B/C at 96th Street. Please try to arrive as close to your scheduled appointment time as possible, as we may still be setting up for you or shooting another client. If you do arrive early, feel free to wait in the building lobby until your scheduled time.
We can shoot a look either in studio or outdoor, based on client preference. Please let us know in advance if you plan to shoot any looks outdoor, as we will need to account for weather conditions. If it's below 50 degrees or precipitating, we will not be able to shoot outside and will defer to an in studio shoot, unless otherwise discussed.
Hair, Makeup & Grooming
If you haven’t already heard, our wonderful HMUA, Alex Leyva, is a literal wizard (House of Slytherin, to be exact). He has all of the tools and products to make you look and feel your best. If there are specific products you like to use, feel free to bring them along to the shoot, but know that he has a wide range of products for all skin tones and hair textures.
For clients in need of GROOMING, please arrive with a clean face. For hair, you can either arrive with it clean and Alex can style it, or if you know that there is a way you typically style it for auditions, feel free to do so in advance and Alex can just make adjustments for the camera.
For clients in need of HAIR AND MAKEUP, please arrive with a clean face and clean hair. Before beginning the styling process, Alex will ask you about your daily hair and makeup routine to ensure that your headshot will reflect the person that walks into the audition room. That being said, it’s always helpful to come with a clear idea of how you would like your makeup done and your hair styled. Feel free to bring inspiration images or pictures of yourself to make sure that we deliver exactly what you are looking for. If you would like your hair blown out, you can arrive with wet or damp hair and Alex will style it from there. If you co-wash or tend to skip multiple days between washing your hair, please make sure it is as clean as possible so that the style will hold.
For clients in need of MAKEUP ONLY, please arrive with a clean face and your hair fully styled as you would like it for the session. Alex will ask you about your daily makeup routine to ensure that your headshot will reflect the person that walks into the audition room. If you have natural/curly hair and you would like to shoot or arrive in a protective hairstyle, that’s totally cool.
In terms of what to wear, solid colors with a little texture often read best on camera. Jewel tones and earth tones add a nice soft pop to photos, whereas anything that is too heavily saturated or neon does not read well. Patterned tops can also make a shot really stand out, but make sure to bring some solid-colored options as well as back-ups. If you are the type of person who doesn’t wear much color, don’t stress; neutral tones will read great as well.
In terms of necklines for male-identifying clients, crew necks, v necks, button ups, henleys, etc. work well, along with items that can be layered (i.e. jackets, sweaters, blazers, etc.).
For female-identifying clients, favor cuts that you feel flatter your figure best. We really like tank tops, shirts with interesting necklines, layering items, and former-fitting clothing.
Former-fitting clothing always reads best on camera for everyone, so if you feel you are in between sizes, definitely favor the smaller! If you have any questions regarding wardrobe, feel free to reach out to us in advance. Bring as many options as you'd like to the shoot and we can narrow it down together; we prefer you bring more options than the number of looks you are shooting to make sure that the shirt(s) will read well on camera.
Another little trick is that you can go to a store, buy a few options, and return them right after. That way, your clothes will look nice and new and you didn't have to break the bank! H & M has some really great options in their basics line, a lot are 2 for $10 and the colors are really rich. If you’re looking for suggestions, other great stores for headshot tops (from our experience) include GAP, Old Navy, Forever 21, Express, Target, and American Eagle.
To clarify, a "look" is the top you are wearing. Incorporating items like ties, jackets, cardigans, glasses, etc. does not count as different looks, but don't get too crazy with the layering!
We have a steamer, iron, fashion tape, fabric clips, etc., so no need to stress about those details!
We accept payment in full at the time of the shoot in the form of cash, check, credit card, Paypal, or Zelle/a Zelle-powered banking app. Alex can accept cash, check, credit card, or Venmo. The shoot cost and hair/makeup fee will be two separate transactions.
If you’re wondering about Zelle, here is a list of participating banks: https://www.zellepay.com/get-started
Proofs and Post
Headshot proofs will be sent within 7 business days from the shoot date via Pixieset. Pixieset is an awesome digital gallery software that allows you to easily download your proofs, share your photos with friends, family, agents, etc., and keep track of everyone’s favorite shots.
Included in each session is one retouched image per look shot, and additional retouched images may be purchased after the shoot for $30 each. You do not have to pick one shot from each look to be retouched (i.e. your favorite two images of your 2-Look session are from the same look).
Once you have made a decision on which images you’d like retouched, please fill out the form link included with your gallery. Retouched images will be sent within 7 business days from the date of selection. Final images will be shared via Google Drive in printable resolution.
We will keep your RAW image files for two years, so if you decide down the road that you would like additional images retouched, just fill out the retouching request form again.
We recommend sending images to Reproductions (www.reproductions.com) for formatting and printing.
Any day-of concerns can be directed to Amanda at (937)430-5260. Otherwise, feel free to email us at info@sub-urbanphotography with any questions or concerns.
Things come up, we get it! As soon as there is a conflict with your scheduled session time, we would love to know. We require at least 72 hours notice if you will be rescheduling or canceling to allow us time to fill your appointment slot. If it is within 72 hours of your shoot or you are a no-show, your deposit will be forfeited and rescheduling will be offered at our jurisdiction.
Thanks for reading, and we look forward to working with you soon!
